Legislator Recognized for Support of Virtual Education
Richmond, VA – The Virginia Chapter of PublicSchoolOptions.org recognized Virginia State Senator Steve Newman for his efforts on school choice and supporting virtual education.
In a brief ceremony at the Virginia State Capitol, representatives from PublicSchoolOptions.org presented Senator Newman with an award lauding his efforts as a champion of school choice and recognizing his leadership in support of public school options.
Cherie Nielsen, Virginia PublicSchoolOptions.org Parent Leader, stated “We are very honored to recognize Senator Newman with this award and look forward to working with him in the future to maintain a parent’s option to choose the type of education that best meets the needs of their child.”
Senator Newman was instrumental in securing passage of HB 324 sponsored by Delegate Dickie Bell from Staunton at the 2015 General Assembly Session. This land-mark legislation creates a full-time virtual school in the Commonwealth and ends the practice of depending on local partnerships in each school district for virtual school that is subject to change with each academic school year. Additionally, HB 324 will make it possible to offer virtual education for grades K-12. Currently, only grades K-7 are offered. Although HB 324 passed in 2015 and was signed by Governor McAuliffe, the legislation contained a re-enactment clause. Delegate Bell has promised to reintroduce the legislation in January 2016 when the General Assembly returns to Richmond for the regular session.
Senator Newman remarked, “I am pleased to be recognized by PublicSchoolOptions.org. I have attempted to be a champion for K-12 education in this Commonwealth for over 20 years including the use of school choice. I have always trusted parents to determine what form of education best fits for their child. Virginia’s public schools are some of the finest in the nation. We have found that, in some circumstances having an option like virtual education is essential to a student’s growth and development.”
