Bill makes sure parents have options for their child’s education; child’s future not determined by their zip code
WASHINGTON – Today, PublicSchoolOptions.org president Tillie Elvrum praised the House’s passage of the Scholarships for Opportunity and Results Act, commonly known as the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program. The bill reauthorizes the program for five years.
Students enrolled in the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program have seen remarkable gains in academic achievement and graduation rates since its inception. In addition, the program gives parents more options to choose the school that best fits their child’s learning needs.
H.R. 4901 is cosponsored by leaders on the House Education and Workforce Committee, including Chairman John Kline (MN-2) and Rep. Todd Rokita (IN-4), the Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education. Rep. Luke Messer (IN-6), the founder and chair of the Congressional School Choice Caucus and a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee, is also an original cosponsor of the bill.
A similar bill in the Senate, also known as the SOAR Act, S. 2171, was introduced last October by PublicSchoolOptions.org School Choice Champion Award recipient Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
STATEMENT FROM TILLIE ELVRUM, PUBLICSCHOOLOPTIONS.ORG PRESIDENT:
“With today’s passage of the DC Opportunity Scholarship Program, we are one step closer to continuing to give all DC students the best opportunity for success by allowing parents to choose the school that best fits their child’s needs. As parents, we know what is best for our children and we should always be trusted with these most important decisions. We are grateful to the cosponsors of this legislation and their efforts to protect school choice.”
