National School Choice Week events across the country highlight school choice options for students and families
WASHINGTON – Today, PublicSchoolOptions.org joins with other school choice advocates across the country to kick off National School Choice Week, a week-long celebration of education options that benefit families and students.
PublicSchoolOptions.org will participate in National School Choice Week events in Indiana, Maine, Alabama, Virginia, Georgia, Texas, and Wyoming. These events will feature students and families who benefit from school options, and will partner with other like-minded organizations to promote the value of school choice.
PublicSchoolOptions.org believes that every child, regardless of their zip code or how much money their parents make, deserves the best start in life. We firmly believe that begins with a parent’s ability to choose the school where their child will thrive — whether that’s in a traditional brick and mortar school, public virtual school, charter school, home school, or private school. Every child learns differently, even within the same family. Giving parents options so their child can succeed is critical.
In December, PublicSchoolOptions.org commended President Barack Obama for swiftly signing the Every Student Succeeds Act, which reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The new law is a step forward in giving power back to states to determine how best to assess and improve its schools and empowering parents with more of their children’s education decisions.
As National School Choice Week kicks off, and the implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act gets underway, we encourage the states to take their responsibility seriously in designing accountability systems that better serve its students and families.
STATEMENT FROM TILLIE ELVRUM, PUBLICSCHOOLOPTIONS.ORG PRESIDENT AND SCHOOL CHOICE ADVOCATE:
“We are excited to celebrate National School Choice Week with parents, students, teachers, families, and other choice groups from across the country. This week — and every week — we are thankful to the lawmakers who have trusted parents to choose the school where their children learn best. This week we hope elected officials around the country will recognize it’s time to trust parents to make decisions about their children’s education.”
PublicSchoolOptions.org is a national alliance of parents that supports and defends parents’ rights to access the best public school options for their children. The Coalition supports the creation of public school options, including charter schools, online schools, magnet schools, open enrollment policies and other innovative education programs. Additionally, we advocate for equal access without restrictions to these public schools for all children.
