Event features Speaker Paul Ryan; school choice champions Senator Tim Scott, Congressman Luke Messer
WASHINGTON – Tomorrow, PublicSchoolOptions.org president and parent advocate Tillie Elvrum will deliver remarks at the National School Choice Week Rally on Capitol Hill to celebrate National School Choice Week. Elvrum, who will provide the parent perspective on school choice, will join with fellow school choice advocates including House Speaker Paul Ryan, as well as Congressional School Choice Caucus leaders Senator Tim Scott and Congressman Luke Messer. Also appearing will be Senate Health Education Labor & Pensions Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander, House Education and Workforce Committee Chairwoman Virginia Foxx, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, House Majority Chief Deputy Whip Patrick McHenry, and Congressman Todd Rokita.
National School Choice Week is an annual, weeklong celebration of the diverse education options that benefit families and students.
All children deserve the best start in life, regardless of their zip code or how much money their parents make. It starts with a parent’s ability to choose the schools where their child will thrive — whether that’s in a traditional brick and mortar school, public virtual school, public charter school, home school, or private school. Every child learns differently, even within the same family, and parents need to be trusted with these important decisions because they know their child best.
PublicSchoolOptions.org strongly supports the Every Student Succeeds Act, which gives power back to states to determine how best to assess and improve its schools and empowers parents with more of their children’s education decisions. States must take their responsibility seriously in designing accountability systems that better serve its students and families and should give parents a seat at the table when it comes to crafting education policies.
PublicSchoolOptions.org also supports the nomination of Betsy DeVos as U.S. Secretary of Education. She is a strong, tireless, and long-time school choice advocate who believes in empowering parents with decisions about their child’s education. For over 20 years she has focused on making sure all children, regardless of their zip code or socioeconomic status, have access to a variety of educational options.
STATEMENT FROM TILLIE ELVRUM, PUBLICSCHOOLOPTIONS.ORG PRESIDENT AND SCHOOL CHOICE ADVOCATE:
“School choice is a treasure to celebrate. Our mantra is ‘I Trust Parents’, because when parents are given options and trusted to make education decisions for their children, families and communities thrive. This week our advocacy efforts across the country will help inform lawmakers and education officials about the benefits of providing educational choice to families and will help establish policies that put even more trust in parents.”
