Local School Choice Advocacy Organization Recognizes State Legislative Champions
AUSTIN, Texas — On Wednesday the Texas Chapter of PublicSchoolOptions.org (PSO) awarded Representative Gary VanDeaver with its Champion of School Choice Award for his strong support and leadership in the fight for giving Texas families access to more school choice options. The award was presented to Representative VanDeaver at PSO’s annual Capitol Day Rally yesterday, where hundreds of students and families who benefit from Texas’ public virtual schools attended.
Representative VanDeaver has introduced HB539, which would eliminate the requirement that Texas military families enroll their child in a traditional brick and mortar public school for one year prior to allowing them to attend one of Texas’ virtual schools.

STATEMENT FROM REPRESENTATIVE GARY VANDEAVER:
“I want to thank PublicSchoolOptions, org for this award for my filing House Bill 539 that gives students in military families the ability to enroll in our state’s virtual school network just as soon as they enroll in our state’s public schools. Our military families sacrifice so much for us that giving them more choice for their children is just a simple thing that we can, and should, do to help these students when they enroll in our Texas public schools. I will continue working to make sure every Texas student has access to the education that works best for them. I am thankful for this award and it will serve as a constant reminder to do what’s best for students and parents.”
STATEMENT FROM SHEA MACKIN, PUBLICSCHOOLOPTIONS.ORG TEXAS CHAPTER PRESIDENT AND PARENT LEADER:
“Representative VanDeaver’s commitment to students and families is something to be celebrated. The trust that he puts in parents to choose the best school setting for their child is at the heart of school choice. Because of Representative VanDeaver, the future of Texas’ children is bright.”
