We tuned into a Pennsylvania Coalition for Public Charter Schools webinar to hear from the experts about social emotional learning in an online environment.
We were blown away by the metrics, strategies and successes of the group of teachers from PA Cyber who lead a program titled “Girl Talk,” which brings together female students from grades 5 to 8 to connect with one another, share a safe space for open discussion, and create an opportunity for students to grow their emotional regulation skills.
Among their approaches to getting the students to open up and discuss how they are feeling, is having the girls share an “emoji” that best represents how they are feeling that day.
Similarly, students are anonymously polled in a “word cloud” format pictured above– in real-time — to demonstrate common sentiments of the students. These types of activities, the teachers and counselors noted, are important to establishing a comfortable atmosphere for sharing, which is an important precursor to developing social and emotional learning capabilities at this adolescent age.
We’re all for using these engaging forms of technology to help our students grow in ways that will help them become expressive, self-aware and healthy adults.
