Last week PSO board president Tillie Elvrum spent four busy days in Tampa and Tallahassee participating in Florida’s Celebrate Youth event, which was part of National School Choice Week, and taking part in a parent legislative fly-in. Tillie, along with Florida parent advocates Melissa Ley and Lawrence Kerwin, barnstormed the state capitol to meet with legislators and attend committee meetings, pushing PSO’s message that parents need to be trusted to make education decisions for their children. Melissa’s 8th grade daughter, Abigail, a student at Florida Cyber Charter Academy, also attended the meetings and enjoyed tours of both the Florida House and Senate chambers.
They met with lawmakers including Senator Dennis Baxley, Representatives Manny Diaz, Jason Fischer, Jake Raburn, Byron Donalds, and Rene Plasencia.
Florida has always been a leader for school choice and several bills introduced this session will enhance those choices even more. Read about the bills in the graphic below.
It was a successful four days and PSO looks forward to returning to the capitol again to make parent voices heard!
