Last week, WKZO Kalamazoo interviewed PublicSchoolOptions.org President Tillie Elvrum regarding the results of a new statewide Michigan poll, which indicated overwhelming support for parent involvement in school turnaround and closure efforts. Specifically:
- 82% of voters believe that school performance evaluations cannot be based only on M-STEP scores (Michigan’s statewide standardized test).
- 82% of voters feel that schools should not be closed based on test scores alone.
- 93% of Michiganders believe that schools should not be closed without a formal public hearing.
These overwhelming majorities highlight the disconnect between policymakers and parents when it comes to school closures and education reform. To hear more about our perspective on the results, listen to Tillie’s interview below.
